Common reasons to prune here

• Roof, gutter, and siding clearance. Constant contact plus constant moisture is how moss, gutter clogs, and rot start.
• Deadwood removal. Dead limbs high in a conifer are the pieces that come down first in a windstorm.
• Crown thinning or reduction. Reducing sail area and end weight on overextended limbs.
• Clearance for structures and driveways. Getting limbs off a garage, out of a walkway, or away from a fence line.
• Light and views. Careful, limited work — reputable providers will explain what a tree can tolerate.

What good pruning is not

Topping — cutting the leader out of a tree to shorten it — creates weak regrowth and often makes a tree more hazardous, not less. If a tree is genuinely too big for its location, removal and replanting with a species that fits is usually the more honest conversation.

Timing in the Puget Sound climate

Dormant-season pruning (late fall through late winter) suits many deciduous trees, while clearance and deadwood work can often happen year-round. Some species and some pest or disease pressures argue for a specific window, so ask providers what they recommend for your particular tree rather than assuming a single rule.

Utility lines are a special case

Pruning near energized conductors is regulated line-clearance work. If branches are close to service drops or primary lines, contact your electric utility about their vegetation program before hiring anyone for that portion of the job.

What to include in your request

1. How many trees, and roughly what species and height.
2. Which specific limbs or areas are the problem.
3. Whether anything is close to a roof, wire, or fence.
4. Whether you want debris hauled or chipped on site.
5. Photos from the ground looking up, plus one from across the yard.
