What affects a stump grinding quote

• Diameter at ground level, measured across the widest point — not the trunk higher up.
• How many stumps, and how close together they are.
• Grinding depth. Enough for lawn, or deeper for a patio, footing, or garden bed.
• Surface roots. Long buttress roots running under a lawn add time.
• Access width. Gate openings, steps, and slopes decide whether a walk-behind grinder or a larger machine can get there.
• Rocks and debris. Rocky fill dulls teeth quickly and slows the work.

Call for utility locates first

Grinding is digging. In Washington, calling 811 before excavation is the standard step for marking public utilities, and private lines — irrigation, low-voltage lighting, septic, gas to a fire pit — are typically the property owner's responsibility to identify. Discuss who is arranging locates before work is scheduled.

What you are left with

Grinding produces a mound of chips mixed with soil. Ask whether the provider will remove the grindings, backfill with topsoil, or leave the pile for you. Fresh grindings are not ideal planting medium — most people backfill with soil if they intend to plant soon.

Grinding versus full stump removal

Grinding shaves the stump down and leaves the root system to decay in place, which is cheaper and far less disruptive. Full excavation of the root plate is occasionally needed for construction or a foundation, and it is a much larger job.
