Around Puget Sound, removal requests usually come down to a handful of situations: a conifer that has grown well past the house it was planted next to, a big-leaf maple shedding limbs over a driveway, an alder or cottonwood that has gone brittle, or a tree that has started leaning after a wet winter loosens saturated soil.

What drives the cost of a removal

• Height and trunk diameter. A 30-foot ornamental and a 120-foot fir are completely different jobs.
• Drop zone. Open backyard versus threading pieces between a fence, a deck, and a neighbor's garage.
• Access. Whether a chipper and truck can get close, or everything has to be carried out by hand.
• Targets and hazards. Roofs, sheds, fences, septic fields, and anything near utility lines.
• Cleanup scope. Haul everything away, leave rounds for firewood, or chip on site.

What to include in your request

1. Roughly how tall the tree is, and how wide the trunk is at chest height.
2. What is underneath and around it, in every direction.
3. How a crew would reach the tree from the street.
4. Anything you have already noticed: lean, cracks, fungus, dead top, heaving soil.
5. Photos — one from a distance showing the whole tree, one at the base, and one showing access. Photos change quote accuracy more than anything else you can send.

Permits and local rules

Some Puget Sound cities regulate tree removal, especially on slopes, in critical areas, or for trees above a certain size.
